HEARTQUEST RITE OF PASSAGE 2011 In order to get the most out of such an important and potent time at this juncture of transition for your family, we offer a series of experiences prior to the encampment weekend that will enhance and guide this process as well as prepare each participant to embody the Rite of Passage experience. Everyone knows what they are doing when they arrive, and will become more conscious of it as we go through the Rite of Passage Enactment weekend with full community presence. After the Opening Ceremony, there is a 2 month preparation process for the parents, the teens and the family “elder”. During the 2 months, the family is asked to meet once a week as a family, and invite the elder to attend as much as possible. This is an opportunity for the teens to establish their "inner parent." In this way, the parents can begin to ease up, while the teen has an opportunity to take up their own responsibilities, and show the parents they can do it. The "elder" assists in the negotiations, and witnesses the changing dynamics. As well, there are three preparation art process classes happening approximately every other week for everyone. The Elder may be a friend to the family, or a family member like an uncle or aunt. We suggest they be age 21 or older, and the same gender as the teen if possible. Elders have shared that participating in this process with a family is a true blessing on so many levels. GUIDEBOOKS: There is a guidebook provided for the family, for the parents, and the elder, as well as the facilitators. The teens simply attend the 3 preparation classes and family circles each week. There will be some completion of ritual tools, like craft work, at home. The Death Arrow and the child spirit totem are two of these that the teens will use during the enactment weekend. The complete program, with all the classes, would ideally be attended by everyone. However, we know there are other commitments already in place for the summer. Please just do your best to attend, and make up the experience to the best of your ability.
